Students who are interested in the YFS, but don't want to have it school based, should sign up here.
When you sign up, you don't have to have a chapter ready and started. Start to recruiting your friends and like-minded people to join your chapter. Our, you can just be inactive and we will tell like-minded students in your area to join your chapter. |
Teachers can start their YFS Chapter at their school. You make the meeting times, and the activities, or you can have us send you a detailed handbook and several curriculums tailored to your needs.
YFS clubs can have varying levels of commitment. It's okay if you don't have the time or resources to make your chapter super great. As long as you go along with our mission of improving and spreading awareness about our fisheries, or spreading the sport of fishing, you can plan your own activities. |
You are a volunteer, and you don't have to lead a chapter, or it can just be you and a friend or two.
You sign up, and are inactive for most of the year. However, we tell you if there are any good volunteer opportunities coming your way, and we will tell you how to better your community. |

Q and A
Q: How big would I have to make this?
A: As big as you want (3 minimum). This program is very flexible. We will walk you along every step of the way. You could perhaps round up a few interested students and have a few meetings and learn a few things for the first year before making it bigger. We have made plenty of fun learning materials and projects for you to use. You don’t have to fish or make a ton of aquariums to join the program.
Q: How could I get additional funding?
A: We can provide grants for you to write to. We also have discounts will many companies, and if you are only missing a few aquarium or fishing parts, we often have spare materials available.
Q: What do I do if I have a question?
A: Feel free to email us. If it is a question that involves some fishing or fishkeeping related that we don’t know, we will pass the question down to a person that is knowledgeable.
Q: What is a good place for a field trip?
A: We can give you a list of places to go around here, and some activities you could do there.
Q: Can I make my own curriculum?
A: Sure you can! We’ll also help you out and give you good ideas if you would like.
Q: I want to fish, but there is no lake near me.
A: There are ponds located near most schools, and they have fish. In fact, the CMS Chapter uses a privately owned 1 acre pond to fish in (with permission, of course). If the ponds are on private property, ask the landowner for permission.

Student Testimonials
“I extremely like this program. It’s a good cause, and I like working in it. I really hope this program goes to other schools, so that other students can enjoy this program. Bill and Mr. Herdman are very dedicated to this program, and there are a lot of kids who are also very dedicated and want this program to expand. My favorite activity is fishing.”
-Student Bryan D.
“The YFS is a very fun program, and I like it a lot. I think it would be great if other schools adopted this program. The program is very well planned, and Mr. Herdman and Bill have done a very good job. Other students, such as David, have also done a nice job and helped out a lot. My favorite activity are the nature projects.”
