Join Us For A Day of Bassin'!

The Youth Fisheries Sciences (YFS) has proudly partnered up with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) and Lews to create the MD Bank Bass Fishing Tournament. This charity bass fishing tournament raises money to support our stocking and watershed improvement projects. The WSSC has allowed participants free access to their grounds for the event.  By participating in this tournament, you agree that neither the YFS nor the WSSC is not liable for incidents that happen. Kids and adults alike are allowed to participate in this tournament.
The tournament will be held at Brown's Bridge Recreation Area at Rocky Gorge Reservoir, in Burtonsville, MD, on July 29th, from 4:00 - 7:45 PM. Participants must first sign up at our stand next near the boat ramp, as well as pay the admission fee of  $10. We do allow participants to sign up later. From there, they are allowed to fish until the award ceremony at 7:45 PM. You are allowed to fish around the public shoreline. The admission fee is  $10.

Free Access Permit Information
Rocky Gorge Reservoir is a great fishery; secluded, wild, and having with some real lunkers. The WSSC, which normally charges $6 for a one day access to the reservoir, has graciously provided tournament participants with free-use badges for the 29th. To get your badge for the tournament, simply click here.
Weighing and Winning
The YFS will have people with scales come and weigh your fish. When you caught your fish, put it in your livewell (see below), and continue fishing. Once you see someone with a scale come, please take out your fish and hand it to him/her. The fish will be weighed, and returned to the water, and you will get a fist bump. This is catch and release only, folks. Let's have the fish swim way for another day.

At the award ceremony at 7:45 PM, we will announce the winners give out prizes. The awards will be at the place were you sign up.

 The Rules
We have a set of rules for you to follow. We need you to follow them. These rules are needed to ensure the well being of the fish and environment, and to make sure we can hold the tournament again next year. Anyone who sees you cheating can take a photo of you in the act of doing so and get you DQ. Serious offenses may involve police.

The penalty for not following the rules is a DQ. We also reserve the right to turn anyone away for any reason.

1. Have a valid MD fishing license if you are over 16 years of age.

This prevents a lot of problems that we might have, folks.

2. Use some sort of livewell.

You just caught your 10 lber, and your heart is racing with excitement. But where do you put the fish? You leave her in some shallow water, and she escapes.  You leave her on the ground, she dies. What do you do?

Your livewell, which can be a big cooler filled with water, or something fancy, holds the fish and keeps the fish alive. Remember, a big cooler filled with water counts. Also, a dead fish is disqualified.

3. Keep the fish alive.

Dead fish are disqualified. This is also a catch and release tournament.

4. Only bass count.

Any fish with "bass" in it's common name counts for this tournament.  If you by some chance catch a 20 lb rock bass, it counts. Fish that are allowed for this tournament include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, and spotted bass.

5. Follow all MD DNR rules regarding your fishing.

Don't break the law. Enough said.

6. Only hook and line allowed. No nets of any sort.

As long as you follow that, and other DNR rules, you are good. Live bait is allowed. We also welcome any fly fishermen who come fish with us. The more, the merrier!

7. No bass caught prior to the tournament can be used to weigh in.

That's cheating, and you will be DQ.

8. You may not use another person's fish to weigh in as your own, and you may not give another person your fish to weigh in as their own.

That's cheating, and you will be DQ.

9. You may not assault, both verbally and physically, harass, or otherwise  interfere with someone and his/her fishing.

You will be DQ. Making excessive noise, getting too close to someone fishing, or causing disturbances in the water is considered interference.

10. You may not catch a fish for someone else, and vice versa.

That is a DQ, but's it's okay if you teach.

11. You may not litter, or over-wise dump anything on the ground with the potential to be harmful to environment or pollute the water.

Folks, Triadelphia Resevoir is a beautiful place. It's serene, and clean. Let's keep it that way. Don't litter. Also, keep in mind that Triadelphia is used for DRINKING WATER. Would you drink water or have your loved ones drink water from a disgusting source? Keep in mind that ever bit counts. Don't little or dump anything there that may be a pollutant.

12. You may not interfere with or enter private property and private proceedings.

If it's not yours, please don't touch it. Other people own property near or next to the reservoir. You may get in some serious trouble.

13. You may not disturb wildlife or the land on WSSC property.

Don't cut down trees, bulldoze hills, or burn bushes to get to your favorite fishing spot.

14. You are responsible for your own property and safety in this tournament.

By entering, you acknowledge that.

15. No boats will be allowed for this tournament.

This is bank fishing only.

16. You will allow us to check bags and levels before entering.

This is to prevent cheating, so that you can't bring in a fish caught prior.

17. You may not fish out side of the designated shore fishing boundaries.

We must respect private property and the wishes of others. Plus, no attendant is patrolling outside of the boundaries to weigh your fish.
